Powerful, Inspirational Women: Rebekah Kennedy

What does it mean to you to be ‘powerful, inspirational?”
RK: “I think being inspirational can be a very powerful idea in your life. It really is an amazing thing to be able to inspire people. To be an inspiration for other people to follow in their own dreams. It definitely means a great deal to me and something I take seriously when I can affect someone else’s life. If you can help or inspire someone to reach their own goals, that’s a really powerful thing.”

Have there been times in your life when you felt like you were powerful and inspirational?
RK: “I have felt inspirational when I’m able to help people who want to act. If I can point them in the right direction of where to find classes near them, or explain how to get started, I feel like I’ve helped them take a step towards their goal. It’s really an amazing feeling to hear that I’ve inspired someone to follow their dreams and to go after what they love. The idea of touching people’s lives in that way is very inspiring to me and gives me the determination to keep going myself. And it makes me feel really powerful when I can inspire someone else.”

How have you overcome hardships in your life?
RK: “I’ve not always had the best health, and that’s something that can be really difficult especially in the type of business I’m in. It’s important that I’m strong and feeling well, so I can go on auditions and be away on set for weeks or months at a time. Thankfully I have an amazing husband and family who’ve been there to help me every step of the way. For me, surrounding myself with a wonderful support system is really important and I would not have gotten where I am without them. It’s been a slow process but I’m getting there. It’s sometimes an everyday fight, but God continues to give me the strength to overcome it. As painful as hardships can be, I think they are very important and have made me a stronger and more determined person. The main thing for me is never giving up and working everyday toward my goal.”

What quote, song, book or film comes to mind when you think ‘powerful, inspirational’?
RK: “‘Try not to become a man of success but a man of value’- Albert Einstein”

Big thank you to Rebekah for this interview

Interview with Zuzanna Szadkowski

Zuzanna Szadkowski is an actress best known for her role as Dorota on the hit CW TV series Gossip Girl. She was born in Poland and raised in Indiana, and has a variety of qualifications, such as a BA from Barnard College and an M.F.A from the A.R.T/MXAT Institute for Advanced Theatre Training at Harvard. She has appeared in Law and Order, The Soprano’s and Guiding Light, also appearing in theatre productions, including the current Broadway production Love, Loss and What I Wore. Zuzanna was voted #7 in Rolling Stone’s “50 reasons to watch TV” feature, and has already established a solid foundation for her career. We wish her all the luck in the world for her bright future!

In your opinion, has Dorota learned about the Upper East Side from Blair, or has Blair learned from Dorota?
ZS: “I think Dorota has learned a lot from Blair, and is an expert now on all things Upper East Side. Blair’s world has a lot of rules, and Dorota knows them all!”

When you started Gossip Girl, did you know how big it would become, or how popular your character would become?
ZS: “I was sure the show would be a big hit! I thought the first episode was amazing, and of course, the book series is huge. I still feel surprised and incredibly blessed that Dorota is so well-received. I have the best fans, and I am so grateful.”

Where did the idea for the Chasing Dorota webisodes come from?
ZS: “The web series came from the incredible Gossip Girl creative team and writers. It was a chance for fans to see the world of Gossip Girl from a slightly different angle. I had so much fun shooting these episodes! I had to keep pinching myself because it felt like a dream.”

What is your favourite Dorota line?
ZS: “I have a favourite line in every single episode I have been in. The writers come up with incredibly funny material for me. I especially love it when Dorota goes off in Polish.”

Have you had any crazy fan experiences?
ZS: “I haven’t had any crazy fan experiences. Whenever I meet fans they are sweet, and we have a great time chatting. I am always interested to see how diverse the Gossip Girl fan base is. I have been stopped by Wall Street bankers who are crazy about the show.”

Are people surprised that you don’t really have a Polish accent?
ZS: “People are always surprised by that, and it takes them a moment when I start speaking in my regular voice. My family is Polish so I have a lot of resources to draw from to create Dorota’s way of speaking.”

Which character or cast member do you wish Dorota had more interaction with?
ZS: “I love working with Leighton Meester. Occasionally, I also get to work with Blake Lively which is awesome. I am happy that a couple of seasons ago Serena moved into the Waldorf penthouse. It gives Dorota a chance to take care of both Miss Blair and Miss Serena :)”

You have also helped with the Gossip Girl fan tours in NYC. What was that like?
ZS: “The ‘onlocations’ tour is a great way to meet fans and to celebrate the popularity of Gossip Girl. I had so much fun on the tour bus!”

What would be your dream Dorota storyline, and which storyline of Dorota’s was most exciting for you so far?
ZS: “My dreams have already come true! Dorota had a huge wedding in Season 3! In general, I love it when Dorota goes out in disguise to do some spying for Miss Blair.”

Can you tell us what is coming up in Gossip Girl Season 5?
ZS: “All I can say is that Season 5 will be incredible with some of my favourite storylines to date. Tune in!”

Do you have any other roles coming up?
ZS: “I am currently on stage Off-Broadway in a show called Love, Loss and What I Wore. Check it out at lovelossonstage.com. I absolutely love theatre and am having a fabulous time. The show is funny and touching and an incredible experience for me.”

What do you find captivating about acting?
ZS: “I love telling stories, moving an audience… especially to laughter. I have been acting since I was a kid, and I am totally addicted!”

What does “A Touch of Passion” mean to you?
ZS: “I am most passionate about acting, about working with incredible writers, directors and actors! It is a dream come true to work on a set like Gossip Girl :)”

Interview with Tiffany Alvord

You may want to get to know eighteen year old Tiffany Alvord, because she is destined to be the next huge hit in the music industry! She is one of the few artists on Youtube that is quickly gaining well-deserved fame. Tiffany has over five hundred thousand Youtube subscribers with over eight million channel views. Tiffany is a starlet who is captivating the attention of millions of viewers. What sets Tiffany apart from the rest of the crowd is her ability to write and compose her own music. Tiffany is a beautiful singer-songwriter who has been able to share her songwriting talents with a world-wide fan base.

Who are your major musical influences?
TA: “I think my major musical influence would have to be Taylor Swift. Her songs inspire me a lot. I admire how she handles herself and seems to be so grounded. She seems to be down to earth and a good role model for fans and I want to be the same. I want people to look up to me like they do to her. As for her music, I can tell sometimes when I write a song, they have a similar style to hers. So many pop stars these days have so much drama going on and I don’t want to be that way. I want to maintain my integrity and be true to myself. I look up to artists who can do that.”

What made you join Youtube? Did you predict your current success?
TA: “I joined Youtube because I wanted to share my music with people and get their opinions. I basically wanted to try it to see what would happen. I saw other Youtuber’s getting popular and ‘discovered’ off of Youtube, so I thought; why not give it a try? I wished for success and that one day I could be popular, too, like some of the others. I have always stayed hopeful and with a positive attitude. I’m so amazed at how far my Youtube ‘career’ has come and how many opportunities and experiences I have had just from posting my videos and growing my fan base on Youtube. It has become something more than I’d ever imagined!”

What enchants you about performing?
TA: “I love having an audience to sing to. In my bedroom, or in a studio, it is just me and the camera, but I know that hundreds and thousands of people all over the world will listen to my songs. It is incredible to share my talent and my songs with a worldwide audience. There is something about me and my singing that makes people subscribe and want more. That is what is so enchanting to me. Knowing people like me and connect with my songs is so awesome! I feel so thankful to my fans. As far as performing live, I think the anxiousness before going on stage and the rush I get is the best! It’s a feeling that’s so exciting and different than anything I have ever felt and I only get it performing. I think it’s so cool that I can do something I love and other people enjoy it. It’s a very rewarding feeling.”

What do you like to write songs about? Where do you get this inspiration from?
TA: “I like to write songs about love and life. I get my inspiration from things that happen to me or things that I see happen to other people. Sometimes I write about things I dream of or imagine. I think writing about situations that actually occurred makes it easier to feel and put emotion into the songs. It’s like I can share a part of me with the people that listen and hopefully they can relate.”

What do you hope to achieve in the future?
TA: “I am planning on the release of my first album of original songs by the end of the year. I want to complete more albums in the future. Recording my own songs is amazing and I love it. I don’t want to be known as a ‘cover song artist.’ I want to be seen as a singer/songwriter with her own songs. I want to be successful as a singer and make this my career whether it is independently or with a label. As long as I can keep doing what I love and keep growing as a person and as an artist to reach my potential, I will be happy. I hope I can tour and get to meet fans and thank them for their support.”

What projects are you currently working on?
TA: “I am currently working on my first album, which I’m super excited about! I am working on upgrading my Youtube presence with better quality sound and video production. I’ve been reaching out and collaborating with other Youtuber’s like Boyce Avenue, Jason Chen, Megan & Liz and DeStorm. I’m getting help to brand myself and develop the type of artist that I want to be. I am going on the Alex Goot 2011 Fall Tour at the end of August :)”

How would you describe your sound?
TA: “I would describe it as acoustic/pop. It’s just fun and easygoing. The kind of music that puts you in a good mood. :) I like to write songs that other people can sing along to and that others can relate to.”

Out of everyone you have ever met- who was the most exciting?
TA: “I was able to go on the set of It’s Raining Sunshine starring Miranda Cosgrove and that was really cool to see a real star performing in a professional music video. She was so nice and took time to talk to people and sign autographs. I appreciated seeing that and would want to be the same way. I also met The Scene which is Selena Gomez’s band. I’m friends with Youtuber Christina Grimmie. When Christina was in California practicing with Selena’s band, I was able to go to the studio during a rehearsal. They were awesome. I can’t wait to have a band behind me someday!”

For those aspiring musicians; what advice would you give them?
TA: “Don’t give up! If you really believe in your dreams and keep pushing and give your all, then you never know what can happen! You can’t wait for it to come to you. You have to put the time and work into it. If music is what you love and what you want to do, just keep going and growing! Success comes when hard work meets opportunity.”

Out of every memory you have had in your musical career- what memory stands out?
TA: “A memory that stands out would be when I flew to New York and travelled to New Haven, CT to work with Kurt Schneider at Yale University. It was the first time I was ever on an airplane and it was an experience I will never forget. I had so much fun working with him. The music and videos he did were amazing. He is so talented and so nice. I saw The Lion King while I was in New York, too. It was amazing to be on Broadway in New York. It was all like a dream.”

You have an international fan base! What does this feel like?
TA: “It feels amazing! It’s unbelievable how people all around the world can see my music and get to know me because of the internet! It totally blows me away and I can’t believe it! Youtube has and is changing the music industry and I’m so excited I am part of this new era of sharing music.”

Do you have any mottos or quotes that you live by?
TA: “‘Always Sm:)e’ because a smile can be contagious and make someone else smile too :). I think having a good outlook on life and seeing the positive things we can learn from our experiences is much more helpful than dwelling on what goes wrong or what we don’t like. I also like ‘Always be yourself because those who matter don’t mind and those that mind don’t matter.’ It helps remind me that I should always be myself no matter what and that it doesn’t matter what other people think as long as I’m happy with myself.”

What was it like being on tour with Boyce Avenue and Megan & Liz? Did you get to meet lots of fans?
TA: “It was amazing! I had such a good time and both Boyce Avenue and Megan & Liz were super nice. I feel like Megan and Liz could be my sisters now. We all got along great and it was a blast! I loved being on tour. I met a ton of different people and got some new fans by being on tour with Boyce Avenue. I loved meeting my fans that came to the shows!”

What did you learn from the experience you had while on tour?
TA: “I learned alot about how to interact with the crowd. I love singing, but I need to work on sharing my thoughts by talking to the audience, too. I have so much to say, but I never know how to say it or I forget what I wanted to say. I’m more comfortable now speaking to the crowd. I feel confident performing on stage. The experience helped me grow alot.”

Are you doing any more tours soon?
TA: “Alex Goot, Tiffany Alvord, Luke Conrad 2011 Fall Tour! We are playing twenty-one shows on the east coast from August 26th to September 18th.”

What does “A Touch of Passion” mean to you?
TA: “It means that you are putting your heart into it. It means you are adding a part of you with all your heart and feeling what you are doing, not only going through the actions.”
